RetroMMO is a small-scale indie fantasy MMORPG released in 2020. Although labeled as an MMO and offering a persistent world with multiplayer elements, the game's indie status and niche retro appeal limit its player base. After the initial launch, such games usually see reduced active population unless they gain significant cult following. An estimated 200–300 daily active players is in line with similarly sized indie MMOs several years after release.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a classic MMORPG launched in 2011 by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. Although it had a large player base at launch, the numbers have declined over the years, especially since it's now over a decade old and several expansions have come and gone. However, it still maintains a loyal core community thanks to regular content updates and the strength of the Star Wars IP. As an MMORPG, it does meet the MMO criteria with a persistent online world and the ability to interact with thousands of players simultaneously.
