City of Heroes was a well-known superhero MMORPG launched in 2004 and shut down officially in 2012, but an active community revived it through private servers (notably Homecoming). Activity on these private servers has stabilized, with daily active players generally in the low thousands range (estimated 5,000–10,000 daily as of 2024 based on community server stats and ongoing niche interest). As an MMORPG with a persistent world, it retains a loyal core community but no longer draws mainstream MMO crowds.
