Realms of Despair
December 1994 (31 years ago)
Realms of Despair is a long-running text-based MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) first launched in 1994. While it was one of the larger online text RPGs in its prime, the player base of MUDs has greatly diminished due to the rise of graphical MMORPGs. Today, dedicated communities remain but active daily user numbers tend to be very low, typically ranging from a few dozen to at most a few hundred for even the most resilient MUDs. Based on these genre trends and the game's age, it's likely that current daily players are around 50.
Estimated Daily Players
We estimate that Realms of Despair has currently around 50 players daily.

Realms of Despair is the original Smaug MUD - an interactive multiplayer medieval adventure game - and is free to play. We have an active role playing community, an active player-killing (deadly) community, and a very active peaceful community. Players can choose from 13 classes - including one deadly-only class - and 14 races. Character appearances can be customized on creation, and we have a vast collection of equipment that is level, gender, class, race and alignment specific.
